How to Maintain the Heat Dissipation Effect of Radiators in Suzhou

Suzhou has a cold and humid climate in winter. Radiators, as the core equipment for home heating, their heat dissipation effect directly affects indoor comfort and energy efficiency. If maintenance is neglected for a long time, problems such as dust accumulation, scale formation, and water leakage may occur, leading to a decrease in heat dissipation efficiency. The following provides practical methods for maintaining the heat dissipation effect of radiators from five aspects: daily cleaning, regular inspection, scale removal, scientific use, and seasonal maintenance.

I. Daily Cleaning: Ensure Smooth Air Circulation

The dust accumulation on the surface and gaps of the radiator will hinder the heat dissipation. Especially for the copper-aluminum composite radiators with dense fins, the accumulated dust is prone to blocking the air channels.

Material compatibility for cleaning: The surface of cast iron radiators is rough. Use a soft-bristled brush or vacuum cleaner to clean the gaps, then wipe with a damp cloth. For copper-aluminum composite radiators, the surface is smooth. You can directly wipe with a neutral cleaner and a damp cloth to avoid corrosion by acidic or strongly alkaline cleaners. For steel radiators, avoid using sharp tools to scratch the paint surface to prevent rusting.

Avoid obstructions: Do not place furniture, curtains or other items within 10-20 cm around the radiator to ensure an air circulation space. For instance, if a sofa is placed close to the radiator, it will block the upward flow of hot air, resulting in a significant 30% slower room temperature rise.

II. Regular Inspection: Promptly Address Performance Issues

If minor faults are not dealt with in time, they will gradually worsen and affect heat dissipation:

Water leakage and interface inspection: Every month, check for water stains or dripping at the radiator interface (valves, pipe connections). If any looseness is found, gently tighten the interface with a wrench (avoid over-tightening which may damage the threads); if the leakage is severe, turn off the main valve and contact a professional for repair.

Valve and bracket inspection: Rotate the temperature control valve to confirm if it operates smoothly. If it is stuck, a small amount of lubricating oil should be dripped in. Check if the bracket is stable. If it is deformed or loose, adjust or replace it in time to prevent the radiator from tilting and affecting heat transfer.

Thermal dissipation imbalance troubleshooting: If the radiator has uneven heating and cooling in certain areas, it might be due to blocked pipes or trapped air. You can open the exhaust valve (located at the top of the radiator) to release the air. If the situation doesn't improve, professional pipe unclogging is required.

III. Scale Removal: Addressing the issue of internal wall thermal resistance

Although the water quality in Suzhou is relatively soft, it will still form scale (adhering to the inner walls of the radiators) over time. 1mm of scale can reduce the heat dissipation efficiency by 10% to 15%.

Professional cleaning: Every 2-3 years, have the HVAC technicians use high-pressure pulse cleaning or professional descaling agents to clean the inner walls. Do not attempt to clean them with strong acids or strong bases (as it may corrode the pipes).

- Daily prevention: Install a pre-filter to filter impurities in the water; after the heating season ends, steel radiators need to be "filled with water for maintenance" (fill with water to isolate air and prevent internal oxidation and rusting), while copper-aluminum composite radiators can be emptied or filled with water (depending on the brand's instructions).

IV. Scientific Usage: Optimizing Heat Dissipation Efficiency

Proper use of the habit can enhance the cooling effect of the radiator:

Avoid blocking the convection: Do not hang wet clothes above the radiator (moisture can corrode the inner walls and block the hot air flow), and do not place thick carpets below the radiator (which hinders the cold air from entering the circulation from the bottom).

Stable temperature control: In the initial stage of heating, gradually open the valve (from 1/3 to fully open) to avoid sudden high temperature shock to the pipes; maintain the room temperature at 18-22℃ on a daily basis. Do not frequently open or close the valve (as it will increase energy consumption and affect the stability of heat dissipation).

Room sealing: Inspect the sealing strips of doors and windows, repair the gaps between glass panes, and reduce heat loss. For instance, applying thermal insulation film to windows can reduce heat loss by 15%, enhancing the effectiveness of the radiator.

V. Seasonal Maintenance: Key Maintenance During the Cooling Season

After the heating is turned off, it is the prime time for maintaining the radiators:

- Valve closure: Close the water inlet valve and the return water valve to prevent air from entering the pipeline, which could cause oxidation.

- Material maintenance: For steel radiators, fill them with water (full water maintenance). For copper-aluminum composite radiators, drain the accumulated water (if not in use for a long time); if there is rust on the surface of cast iron radiators, apply a layer of anti-rust paint.

Prepare in advance: Open the valve one week before the heating season to release the air in the pipes, check if the equipment is operating normally, and ensure there is no blockage or leakage.

Maintaining the radiator is a long-term process. Small daily details can effectively enhance the cooling effect and extend the lifespan of the equipment. By cleaning, inspecting, using scientifically and conducting seasonal maintenance, the winter in Suzhou can become warmer and more comfortable, while also saving energy costs.
